Here's some great information about this year's PW Marching Show!

Plymouth Whitemarsh
Marching Colonials

The Plymouth Whitemarsh Marching Colonials are proud to present their 2011 show entitled The American Dream.  Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” guide us through the ultimate sacrifice of fighting for our freedoms.  The dream is further realized by finding love and a sense of community in Pete Seeger’s classic “Turn, Turn, Turn” and the popular hit “21 Guns” by Green Day.  “Railroad,” an original percussion feaure by William Woodward and Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R” remind us that the dream cannot be found without honest work.   Alan Silvestri’s “Forest Gump Theme” bookends the story with “The American Dream Finale” arranged and composed by Tonia Kaufman for the final staging with the iconic white picket fence.
Senior members of the Marching Colonials include Jocelyn Frye, Jake Gadd, Alyssa Melasecca, Nick Oakes, Gaby Peel, Andrew Rexroth, Tony Schultz and Jill Seitz.
The band is under the direction of Tonia Kaufman. Additional staff includes Jeff Phipps,  assistant band director and drill writer; Bobbey Biddle,  guard caption head; William Woodward, percussion caption head; Mark O’Neill, drumline instructor; Danielle Dilks, guard instructor; Joe Spena, brass instructor; Chris Tascione, guard designer and instructor; Sarah Franzone, guard tech; Chuck Gallagher, bass drum tech; and Joe Heininger, consultant.  Custom guard costumes designed by Joe Heininger for A Wish Come True.  Voiceovers are by Jeff Phipps and Leah Phipps.

I hear drums and smell bus exhaust...

Yes gentle readers, it's that annual ritual we all love and love to hate!  Marching Band Season is upon us!
After countless hours of teeth-nashing, eye-rolling, name-calling, tears, sweat and hilarity....Marching Band staffs across the area are getting their fall shows onto the field.
Of course you'll see your Marching Bands at your football games for sure but in addition to that, many schools field Competitive Marching Bands.  That of course means a whole other level of infrastructure, rehearsal, planning, design and logistics.
Best of luck to all the Marching Bands this fall, competitive and otherwise!

If you were wondering where these Competitions are held, below are links to the three main organizations that sponsor and adjudicate these contests.

For those of you who might no be aware of the elaborate system that has developed in our area for this musical/aerobic activity, the sites below also describe their purpose.

For an historical recounting, this site, does a fine job.

In our area, both the Cavalcade of Bands and the Tournament of Bands Associations have roots back to the mid-1970's.  There are plenty of grand kids of former Marching Band members now in the band themselves around here!  Additionally, the United States Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) / Youth Education in the Arts (YEA) sponsor local contests....

If you've never seen a High School Marching Band show, please get to one ASAP!  The students and adults involved engage in a labor of love that has become increasingly rare in our 21st century digital age.  It is beyond remarkable what these young folks are capable of week after week from mid-August until early November.

A few shows of note next weekend:
10/1 Blue Mountain CBA
10/1 Central Bucks South USSBA
10/1 Spring-Ford TOB

Hello Music fans!

Hello and welcome to the inaugural post about High School Music and Musicians in Montgomery County Pennsylvania!  On this site, I'll do my best to point out the amazing and inspirational goings on in the various High School Music Departments in our area.  There are many, so eventually you'll see your favorite in the spotlight!
As readers of this already know, the sheer scale and excellence of the myriad musical offerings at our county secondary schools rivals that of any area in the United States.  Busy Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Choir and Marching Band directors and conductors often have little time to trumpet even the most treasured accomplishments of their fantastic music programs.  I'll try to help!
